I enjoyed this analogy for a computer’s hard disk:

The hard drive is your computer’s cupboard under the stairs: a large, if unruly, storage space full of important stuff. Unlike a cupboard, a hard drive is a mechanical device that often proves to be a computer’s Achilles heel, so you must handle it with care.
